Winding down after the big preconference

Well, Folks:
We're winding down after the big 6 hour preconference session today where we welcomed art education faculty and colleagues from the States, Canada, Finland, and the Netherlands to say the least. I blogged about the sessions highlights from my perspective at www.eartharteducation.com (click the blog button at the top right).

I miss you, kiddies & Mrs Salesses!

Miss Cassandra is off to NAEA

Tomorrow (early), I am off to the NAEA (National Art Education Association) Convention in NYC. This is the annual big whig gathering of everyone in the field of visual arts education. I'm so excited! For many reasons! Not just because I will be in New York City! Not just because I will be presenting on the Art and Essay Contest, but really more so because I will be reconvening with art ed mentors I have not seen in a couple of years, namely, Dr. Sandra Bird, Debi West, and Jeanette Watchman.

I will also be helping out with a variety of FSU's activities as well as presenting my own thoughts for a short 25-minute session on Saturday, March 3rd, which also happens to be my Dad's Birthday! My Mom will join me in New York for a couple of days to watch me present!

In addition to all of these stimuli, I will be attending sessions and getting new ideas for my art teaching experience at DeSoto Trail! I'll be able to do some art myself at some of these sessions to test out a process or two myself, as well as visit with vendors and get some free samples! Hold on to your suitcases!

February Art Stars!

Congratulations to our featured Art Stars for the month of February! These students are recognized because they go "Above and Beyond" by creating wonderful artwork in their spare time. Each has her artwork displayed in the Art/Music bulletin board on campus. Congratulations! Keep up the creative work!

Community Mural Project with FSU's Dept. of Art Education, 7 Days Festival, & the City of Tallahassee

Come Out and Paint!

FSU's Department of Art Education, the 7 Days of Opening Nights Festival, and the City of Tallahassee invite you to come out and paint! We are inaugurating our 2nd Annual Community Mural project at the Carlstedts' building on Gaines Street near downtown Tallahassee, FL.

Our community partnership supplies the paint, brushes, and other materials with which we will decorate the Carlstedts' building with visions of local species within a landscape of local flora and fauna. Above is the full-color sketch of the mural design formulated by FSU graduate students Cassandra, Samantha, and Anna.

Welcome to Our New Art Blog!

Welcome! This is the new blog of our Trailblazing Art Stars at DeSoto Trail Elementary School in Tallahassee, FL!

My name is Miss Cassandra Whitehead, and I am the Spring 2012 Art Intern at DeSoto Trail with Mrs. Kim Salesses! I am enjoying getting to know each of our students and learning a lot from Mrs. Salesses. My first few weeks have been great! We are finishing up a weaving unit with K-2nd grade, and we recently closed up a fiber arts/batik project with the 3rd-5th grade classes. In conjunction with the batik project, 3rd - 5th grades also learned a bit about fiber arts in Indonesia and the narrative art (art that tells a story) of Faith Ringgold.
